This April 2025, the Disaster Risk Finance Academy: Affordable Disaster Risk Insurance through Public-Private Partnerships (PPIPs) takes place in Istanbul, Türkiye. Organized in collaboration with the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (TCIP), the Insurance Development Forum (IDF), and academic partners, this program brings together thought leaders, policymakers, and experts from across the globe to explore innovative solutions for building disaster risk finance markets.
Across the developing world, nearly one in five people are at risk of climate-related disasters that could leave them vulnerable and unable to recover. With only about 10 percent of the direct economic costs of natural hazards insured in developing countries, there is a growing need for effective risk-finance mechanisms that ensure vulnerable populations have access to affordable insurance. Governments and the private sector alone are ill-equipped to address these rising risks, and public-private partnerships (PPIPs) are essential for creating sustainable and inclusive disaster insurance markets.
